Grim Fandango's epic story of four years in the life (or death) of Manny Calavera, travel agent to the dead, has been remastered to look, sound, and control even better than when it won GameSpot's Game of the Year award upon its original launch. I just wish its interactions were more intuitive and logical to make it feel more naturally rewarding. One of the most acclaimed adventure games of all time is now back, better than ever. Characters are voiced to perfection and the score is simply phenomenal. I can't say enough good about the soundtrack and atmosphere. It still has a terrible inventory system and very slow walking speeds. A game breaking bug in the conveyor belt scene forced me to reload an earlier save, and many other noticeable glitches gave the game an air of low tech affair that hasn't completely escaped its era. The amazing art direction must be commended, but I can't help and wonder how much better this would have looked in the more traditional hand-painted look of games released just a few years prior.ĭespite a new coat of polish, Grim Fandango suffers from many technical limitations. I struggled to find the enjoyment and motivation to keep going, despite everything else the game had so generously to offer.Įvery scene's early 3D era renders look dated by today's standards without having that charming retro quality to them, and the remaster does not improve backgrounds in any way. Once I knew the solutions, I could sort of understand what the designers were thinking but I regularly felt there weren't enough lead-ins to point towards them. Several puzzle solutions eluded me well beyond the typical capricious nature of point and click logic, and some were difficult to perform even with a walkthrough at hand. Grim Fandango may be a worthwhile selection from a historical perspective, and the remaster adds a ton of quality improvements that attest to the love and care that has been put into this product, but its aggravating lack of puzzle logic and poorly exposed direction are as disappointing today as they ever were. I love Tim Schafer's work, but perhaps more so the ideated version of his lifetime achievements and agreeable persona. The remaster seemed like a good opportunity to remedy that voluntary oversight, with appropriately modernized expectations. I enjoyed the majority of the old LucasArts adventure titles in their prime, but experienced this one for the first time nearly 25 years after its original release. Conveniently perfected point and click interfaces were replaced with unrefined tank controls with no real player experience benefit. The advent of early 3D graphics traded magnificently detailed hand-painted scenes for crude and static low-poly backgrounds. Some beloved classics don't age as well without a strong tint of nostalgia to conceal their shortcomings.ĭownvoting such a universally acclaimed classic will inexcusably feel sacrilegious to original fans and videoludic historians alike.Īdventure games took a turn for the worse in the mid to late 90s and consequently put me off the genre entirely for years.
